Music, FX and Legal Considerations

Music, FX and Legal Considerations

List of Sources for Music/FX

Purpose of Game Music

Halo 4: 117

The music here gives an uplifting feeling and makes feel like you can overcome impossible odds. It also speaks of the strength and determination of the main character.

Halo 3: Tribute

The music at first gives you a feeling of success, the war if finally over, you won. Suddenly the music changes to that of sad strings, then choir with higher strings that reach a climax before quickly fading away. You realise now that so many are gone, it is time to bury and mourn the dead.

Legal Considerations

Copyright Law

This law protects other people's stuff from being used by others without permission. The Act was introduced in 1988.

PEGI Rating

Every game has to be labelled depending on the content, visuals or story in the game. This is done by the Pan European Game Information system. Depending on the lyrics the song might be given a rating.

Contracts

If the game company needed someone to create and compose the music for them, they would hire a musician. The musician would sign a contract that would have him agree to do all the music for the company, when he is finished he will be paid and the contract will end.

Licensing

If the game company wants to use another company or individual content, they must ask them for a License.

PRS

This is a collection society that represents their songwriter, composer and music publisher members performing rights.

Psychology of Sound

Unit 73: Sound for Computer Games

P1 Understand the use of Sound and Music in Games.

Nabeel Hajat

Psychology of sound

Speech
Speech in video games has been used for many things. The voices of characters or when you hear someone say ‘Game Over’ [1].

Iconography
In some games there is one sound that becomes recognisable throughout the series, to the point where everyone you know recognises it.

Two examples of this are the Metal Gear Alert [2] sound and the Mario jumping sound [3].

Symbolism
When you see a lightbulb appear over someone’s head that means they have an idea. The sound [4] that accompanies that scene is sound symbolism.

Examples

Definition of Timbre

In music, when two of the same instruments are playing, they both sound different from another. Even when they are being played with the same note and volume.

Timbre is caused by the fact that each note from a musical instrument is a complex tone containing more than one frequency.

Understanding Sound Design Theory

Understanding Sound Design Theory

  • Final Fantasy Victory Fanfare [1]
This song was used to signify that you had won against any enemy in the game. This song works because it gives you a massive feeling of jubilation. I don't think I would want to change it with different music, its perfect as it is.
  • Metal Gear Alert [2]
This sound is used to alert you to the fact an enemy has seen you and now you are exposed. This sound FX works because it makes almost jump out of your skin and give you a little shock. I don't want to change it because its so iconic that to change it would be gaming blasphemy.
  • LOZ Chest Opening and Getting Item Sound [3]
These sounds are used to signify that you are opening a chest and retrieved the item inside. This sound FX works because the first part greatly builds up your anticipation on what's in the chest, while the second makes you feel like you received something important. To change it would be blasphemy.
  • Mario Super Star Medley [4]
This song is used to signify that you are now invincible. This sound FX works because, now you don't have to worry about avoiding enemies and projectiles, you can just run through them. I don't think I would use any different FX.
  • Sonic Ring Gain and Loss Sound Effect [5]
These sounds are used to signify that you got a ring and lost all your rings. These sound FX work because, for the first one you know that you are one step closer to getting a higher level grade, while for the second you feel frustrated that you lost all your rings. I don't think I would use any different FX.

Research
Music and FX gives life to the game, without those aspects the game is lifeless. With sounds in the game it helps you feel the atmosphere. As you progress through the game it also helps to feel the emotions in the game.

Sound Definitions

Waveform is a graphical representation of a shape showing the sound of signal movement. Here is an example below.
Pitch is the quality of sound that depends on high level tone of sound.

Hertz is the frequency of the sound which shows the different cycles. And this leads to determine the pitch level.

Decibel Level determines where the sound is too loud or not. It is important when you set the correct Decibel Level that it is the correct level when recording sounds on music.

A Sound Generator is a object that produces sound.

Foley

Foley is making sounds that are added in post production in films and games. These sound made in studio with people using everyday objects or their own voices to make the sounds.

Copyright Law

Unit 78 Digital Graphics for Computer Games

Copyright Law

This law prevents anyone from copying any gaming material from other people. The definition of this is that any material that is owned by someone else and cannot be used without the creator's permission. In some game companies, the artist owns the graphics so you would need his permission as well.

PEGI

Age ratings are systems used to ensure that entertainment content, such as films, videos, DVD's, and computer games, are clearly labelled by age according to the content they contain.

PEGI is used and recognised throughout Europe and has the support of the European Commission.

Racism, Religion, Equality + Diversity

When marketing the game, Gender and the words above have to be taken into consideration. Game Developers have to abide by the Equality and Diversity Law in all their games. For example, the Tomb Raider games have changed in regards to Lara Croft.

Her clothing has changed over the years. Where she used to wear less clothing, she now wears more.

In 2010 a law called Equality Act was passed. It legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and wider society.

It replaced previous anti-discrimination laws with a single act, making the law easier to understand and strengthening protection in some situations.

BBFC

The BBFC (British Board of Film Censors) are an independent company set up in order to classify films. However, since the act was set up, this has also applied to computer games. All computer games have to be classified under the BBFC.

ASA Codes

The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) is a self-regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the United Kingdom. The ASA are an independent company and they have to report to OFCOM. The ASA have a set of conducts which need to be followed. Any adverts or Game trailers have to pass the ASA Code of Conduct. It checks that is fair, not filled with prejudice and also protects people under 18+.

Libel

A published false statement that damages a game's or person's reputation. An example of this would be someone from Marvel Comics saying something false to someone from DC Comics.

Exercise 5

Computer Game Graphics

  • Print media graphics, such as game poster, game packaging
They are design products such as gaming posters, game packaging, and gaming design covers. Print media is used to help promote and market the game to the relevant target audience. The packaging and manuals should have the relevant information.
  • In-game graphics (head-up display graphics, sprite graphics, background graphics, image textures)
There are health bars and statistics of the player character. It shows how much health/mana the play has etc. It also shows your scoring levels. The Texture art is the look of how something feels. This can be done by designing the object and using colour shading to give an effect on a object. This can be done using computer software.
  • Concept Art graphics
Concept art is used to generate ideas like, characters, buildings, backgrounds, weapons, environments and more. This is the initial starting point for creating a game idea, as it will help you to build your ideas. The types of concept art you can do to help brainstorm ideas are hand drawn design sketches and thumbnail sketches.

Graphic Specification

  • Client Needs
Graphics Designers will have a design brief which will explain all the client needs which they would want in the graphics. The design brief will also help change some of the ideas which they can talk to their clients about and look at different ways to design the best graphics..
  • Audience
Graphics Designers have to design according to the target audience. They will need to ensure that they have a good idea of their audience and ensure the graphics meets the marketing purpose.
  • Thumbnail Sketching
These are really small sketches used to brainstorm ideas for the game.
  • Visual Style, eg colour, style. photo realistic, cell-shaded, anime
Please see this link for artistic styles: http://nabeelhajat.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/exercise-1.html
  • Composition
Graphic Designers have to ensure that every element is laid out appropriately within a scene.
  • Typography
This is a font that should compliment the game. The style of it depends on the genre and themes of the game. An example of this is the Hulk ripping his shirt off and the bold text.

  • Technical considerations, eg file format, file size, optimisation, file naming conventions, asset management , intended output
Please see this link for Technical Considerations: http://nabeelhajat.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/exercise-4.html
